Characteristic of infrared absorption of water was investigated based on Lambert absorption coefficient which was calculated from the infrared spectrum transmissivity measured by using of infrared spectrophotometer, then the distribution of temperature in water heated by infrared rays from ceramic radiant was studied. The results of the study showed that the most of the energy of incident infrared ray to the water was absorbed in very shallow surface layer, about 100μm depth, and the remaining part of water was heated by heat conduction. The distribution of the temperature was calculated by usual heat conduction equation assuming constant surface heat flux. The mount of the heat flux depended mainly on the reflectivity of water and so far as heating effect concerned, when heated by infrared ray, the reflectivity was more important factor than the value of absorption coefficient.
