Two cases of retroperitoneal schwannoma, one of which was benign and the other was malignant, were reported. Case 1 was a 73-year-old man who complained of the left hypochondrial mass. Radiological examinations revealed the mass was retroperitoneal tumor, which was removed transperitoneally on July 26, 1976. It was 23×17×11cm in size and weighed 2,300g, and microscopic study showed a benign schwannoma. Case 2 was a 50-year-old man who complained of the left hypochondrial mass and loss of weight. The tumor was removed transperitoneally with the left kidney, spleen and a part of pancreas. Microscopic study of the tumor showed both spindle shaped and small round tumor cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and mitosis in process and fine reticular fibers in the stroma. From these findings, it was diagnosed as malignant schwannoma. Although a variety of primary retroperitoneal tumors have been reported by many investigators, schwannoma is relatively rare. Forty eight cases of retroperitoneal schwannoma were reported from 1948 to 1976 in Japan, but only 6 cases of them were malignant. The preoperative diagnosis of schwan noma is extremely difficult and final diagnosis has been made by histological examination after operation.
