A highly fluorescent diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative with amino groups was synthesized from Pigment Red 254 by a Pd-catalyzed amination reaction. The amino-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole exhibits a two-step response of fluorescence depending on acidity. This optical property can be applied to a colorimetric detection of acids in the gas phase.
