Semiconductor photocatalyst method was used to decompose chloroform (CHCl_3) in water. TiO₂ particles were dispersed in water containing CHCl₃, and were illuminated with UV light. CHCl₃ was decomposed to yield Clˉ and H⁺. An effect of Pt loaded on the TiO₂ surface was examined; Pt increased the decomposition rate, and the concentration of CHCl₃ decreased below the detection limit with 10 weight % of Pt and with 5h irradiation. The Pt on the TiO₂ powder surface was examined by means of SEM-BEI and EPMA, and found to be loaded ununiformly on the TiO₂ surface.
