Diffusion and transference of mercury vapor emitted from a chlor-alkali plant was studied and a emission source strength was estimated. Mercury concentrationin the atmospheric air was determined at some 20 positions around the plant by means of flameless atomic absorption method. Models of a finite line source or a plane source was applied to the experimental results. Eddy diffusion equations of Sutton and of Calder were used for these models. A source strength estimated frome xperimental results was approximately 1,000μg/s, which was consistent with an estimate from a ventilation capacity and mercury concentration in the air inside the plant. The estimated value was 1/5 to 1/200 of a source strength reported in literature. The concentration of mercury around the plant was calculated from the models and discussed in comparison with experimental data.
