As a step of the study concerned with natural balances, of materials, methane in the air was measured. The method is as follows: 80ml of air is collected, cooled by liquid oxygen-active alumina system, and analyzed by gas chromatography with molecular sieves 13x. The measurement error was within ±2% at a ppm order. Methane contents reached 2.0ppm in the air of urban and industrial area, while it decreased to 1.3ppm in the suburbs. The data of every one hour showed that high polluted air gave the elevated methane contents from the natural level. The atmosphere of the area apart from cities e.g. Hokkaido and the Northeastern provinces, were investigated in 1968. As a result, natural methane was estimated to 1.28ppm on an average.
