In order to study the behaviour of YAMAHATA SAND at high temperature, rapid heating tests were carried out by measuring the thermal expansion of YAMAHATA SAND and KAWACHI SAND subjected to rapid heating. The results obtained were as follows: 1. When rapid heating temperature was over 800℃, the thermal expansion of YAMAHATA SAND immediately after the beginning of rapid heating was smaller and slower in occurring. Low thermal expansion may be one of the reasons why the YAMAHATA SAND mold tends to diminish such casting defects as scab, rat-tail, etc. 2. The difference in rapid heating temperature had a great effect on the difference in thermal expansion. 3. In case of rapid heating at 800℃, moisture had a little effect on thermal expansion, but it had a great effect on thermal expansion in case of rapid heating at 400℃. 4. Moisture had a greater effect on the heating thermal expansion character of YAMAHATA SAND than on that of KAWACHI SAND.
