The quantitation of secretory IgA (referred to as S-IgA), free secretory component (referred to as FSC) and immunoglobulins in neutralized gastric juice was performed. Mancini's single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) method for the quantitation by use of corresponding sera, especially the antisecretory component (referred to as anti-SC) for the simultaneous determination of S-IgA and FSC were carried out. The composition ratios of immunoglobulin classes and of FSC in saliva and gastric juice were examined in order to verify the contamination of the former, and remarkable differences between both were found. The concentrations of each class of immunoglobulin in gastric juice showed increases in parallel with the progress of the mucosal changes in atrophic gastritis, and there were but limited differences in the concentrations between those in gastric carcinoma and atrophic gastritis. In the analysis of immunoglobulin containing cells in the gastric mucosa investigated by immunofluorescent procedure, the numbers of IgG and IgM containing cells were, in general, increased in those with atrophic gastritis, and a proportional remarkable increase of IgA containing cells were noted with the development of the atrophic gastritis of the mucosa. These results were, however, not necessarily in parallel with the concentrations of respective immunoglobulin in gastric juice.
