Succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity in frozen sections of hamster tongue muscle was studied histochemically, and the following results were obtained. 1) On the basis of SDH activity of tongue muscle, it was shown that hamster tongue muscle fibers could be classified into red, white and intermediate muscle fibers. The fibers of each group consisted of 35%, 6% and 59%, respectively. 2) The diameter of hamster tongue muscle fibers generally ranged from 25 to 40 μ . No significant difference in diameter were observed among the three types of fibers. 3) The histological structure of the cross sections, showed that the red muscle fiber had a Felder structure, and that the white and intermediate muscle fibers had Fibrillen structure.
