A thermal phase transition was observed in guinea pig sciatic nerve myelin by samall angle X-ray diffraction. On the lower side of the transition, the diffracted intensity of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th diffraction were almost equal. The repeat distance was 207Å at -2℃. On the higher side of the transition, the diffracted intensity of 2nd and 4th diffratcion were strong and that of 1st, 3rd and 5th diffraction were weak. The repeat distance was 184Å at 8.8℃. The transition occurred gradually from 0℃ to -5℃ in fresh specimens. The increase of the repeat distance in the transition from high temperature to low temperature may be due to the increase of thickness of the layer which consists of proteins and water.
