The 'two cell' concept which was derived from the distinctive properties of two types of lymphocytes, T cells for thymus-derived lymphocytes and B cells for 'bursa-equivalent'-derived lymphocytes, has been contributed to the progress of cellular immunology. T cells are believed to have many important functions, such as recognition of antigen and preservation of immunological memory. In the process of immune response, T cells play three roles; killer, helper and suppressor. Because human T cells also control immune responses to exogeneous and endogeneous antigens, they are widely involved in onset, course and sequel of all kinds of diseases. It should be emphasized the requirement to have a basic knowledge of T cells for medical students and doctors. In this review, the surface markers, function tests and morphology of T cells, together with analysis of immune response of patients of various diseases, are briefly described and the relationship between T cell behavior and diseases in man is discussed.
