It is generally accepted that the nerves maintain the structure and function of the effector or peripheral organs innervated by these nerves and they have an important influence on the growth and differentiation of such organs. Although various reports are available from away back on the trophic function of the nervous system, the true nature of this so-called trophic innervation has not been clarified. Problems concerning the "trophic innervation" are considered to be very important clinically and should also be scrutinized from a viewpoint of nerve physiology. However, to date, while considerable work has been done on the mechanism of the propagation of excitation in nerve fiber, and while it is an essential function of the nerves, little or no work has been done on the physiology of the "trophic innervation". In this review, the problems on the nature of "trophic innervation" especially for muscles were surveyed from the following viewpoints; 1) Definitions and problematic points of "trophic innervation", 2) historical survey of "trophic innervation", 3) the nerve component related to trophic function, 4) atrophy and other characteristics of denervated muscle, 5) cross-innervation of nerves, and 6) the nature of "trophic innervation".
