Plain sellar radiograms and tomograms in frontal and lateral projections were obtained from 40 clinical cases, who had no abnormal lesions in the sella turcica and the sphenoid sinus, and from 50 normal dry skulls. Sellar length, height, width, sellar area and sellar volume were measured in frontal and lateral projections on plain radiograms and tomograms. The author's results can be summerized as follows. 1. There were no statistically significant differences in measurement values of the sella turcica between the clinical cases and the dry skulls on plain radiograms and tomograms. 2. The normal ranges of measurement values of the sella turcica on plain radiograms (mean ±2 SD)were: 1) Length; 8.3-14.3mm (mean 11.3mm) 2) Height; 5.7-11.3mm(mean 8.5mm) 3) Width; 9.6-17.2mm (mean 13.4mm) 4) Sellar area; 48.9-145.7mm2 (mean 97.3mm2) 5) Sellar volume a) Di chiro and Nelson's method; 265.7-1,037.7mm3 (mean 651.7mm3) b) Seki's method; 355.0-1,385.0mm3 (mean 870.0mm3) 3. The normal ranges of measurement values of the sella turcica on tomograms (mean ±2 SD)were: 1) Length a) Left 4mm cut; 7.0-13.0mm (mean 10.0mm) b) Midline cut; 8.0-14.0mm (mean ll.0mm) c) Right 4mm cut; 6.9-12.9mm (mean 9.9mm) 2) Height a) Left 4mm cut; 5.5-10.3mm (mean 7.9mm) b) Midline cut; 5.5-10.7mm (mean 8.1mm) c) Right 4mm cut; 5.4-10.6mm(mean 8.0mm) 3) Width a) Anterior cut; 9.8-17.4mm (mean 13.6mm) b) Central cut; 9.0-15.4mm (mean 12.2mm) c) Posterior cut; 7.6-14.8mm (mean ll.2mm) 4) Sellar area ; 45.6-132.0mm2 (mean 88.8mm2) 5) Sellar volume a) Di Chiro and Nelson's method; 233.6-851.6mm3 (mean 542.6mm3) b) Seki's method ; 311.5-1,135.5mm3 (mean 723.5mm3) 4. The tomogram measurements showed that the length of the midline cut was larger than the lateral cuts, that the width of the anterior cut was the largest and that that of the posterior cut was the smallest. There were, however, no statistically significant differences in the height of the different cuts. 5. There was no statistically significant difference in the sellar width between the anterior tomographic cut and the plain radiogram. The sellar length on the plain radiogram showed a tendency to be larger than the length on midline comographic cut, but the other measurement values, including sellar area and volume, of the plain radiograms were statistically larger than those of the tomograms.
