In order to clarify the effect of leg-lengthening on neuromuscular facilitation by muscle stretch, we examined mechanical responses, especially the mechanical recruitment effect. The leg-lengtheningoperation was performed on one side of the lower leg of the frog (Rana japonica). Three to four weeks after the operation, nerve-muscle preparations, consisting of the sciatic nerve and the peroneal muscle, were isolated from the lengthened leg (lengthened preparation) and the healthy leg (healthy preparation). The healthy preparation was used as the control for the lengthened preparation. The following results were obtained. 1. In lengthened preparations of over 10% lengthening, the maximal indirect and direct twitch tensions showed an apparent decline as compared with those of the control (healthy preparation). There was no significant difference between the extent of decline in the maximal indirect twitch tension and that in the maximal direct twitch tension. 2. The mechanical recruitment effect decreased remarkably in the lengthened preparations of over 10% lengthening. The extent of decline in the mechanical recruitment effect depended on the extent of leg-lengthening. On the basis of these results, the effect of leg-lengthening on neuromuscular transmission wasdiscussed.
