Evaluation of the depth of anesthesia has been dependent entirely on empirical clinical signs and has required very much skill and experience. The present study was designed to search for metric techniques to evaluate the depth of intravenous anesthesia by medical electronic devices. The correlation between the depth of anesthesia and changes in the plethysmograph, EEG, the plasma concentration level of CT-1341 and vital signs was studied in twenty patients awaiting surgerj' under CT-1341 drip infusion anesthesia. The results obtained were as follows : 1) For evaluating the depth of CT-1341 drip infusion anesthesia, the finger plethysmograph was capable of providing a more stable and reliable index. 2) Changes in tidal volume, respiratory rate, blood pressure, pulse rate and skin temperature were found to be poor indicators for evaluation of the depth of CT-1341 drip infusion anesthesia. 3) There were statistically significant differences in the plasma concentration level of CT-1341 among the three groups, who had been assayed to be on the same anesthetic level by medical electronic techniques.
