Cochlear microphonics (CM) produced by acoustic transients and modulated signals was recorded from the basal turn of the guinea pig using the different electrode technique. Several studies have reported sharper tuning characteristics of the basilar membrane than the data of von Bekesy. Generally, the sharp tuning leads to dull reaction of the vibrating system. And CM is supposed to reflect the vibration of the basilar membrane. Therefore, it is assumed that CM shows the different aspects of the signals. Main results are summarized as follows; 1) Latency of CM was estimated to be 70-80μsec. 2) The low frequency slope of the frequency response curve of CM was approximately 5 dB/oct., while the high frequency slope was -30dB/oct. These values were considerably less than those estimated from the data of measurements of mechanical tuning for the basilar membrane. 3) The magnitude of CM condensation (CMc) was not the same as that of CM rarefaction (CMr) when the rate of clicks was below 2000 repetition per sec. 4) CM amplitude varied gradually within about 2msec from the point of the change in stimulus amplitude. 5) CM waveforms to signals were similar to those acoustic signals except that the range of frequency shift was extended to 2 octaves.
