• The question as to whether extracellular Ca++ is essential or not for excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling of skeletal muscle is still debatable. In the present paper, the reports about the effect of Ca++ on E-C coupling were reviewed in aspects of the action of Ca++ as a stabilizer, the place of which can be taken by the other divalent cations such as Mg++, Mn++, etc.
