The fate of antibiotics administered in the patient undergoing open heart surgery as well as in the experimental animals were investigated. The serum level and the concentration of the antibiotics in various organs were measured by means of bioassay, cylinder plate method, during the institution of cardiopulumonary bypass, for up to 3 hours. The following results were obtained. 1) The clearance of antibiotics of the circulating blood was found to be much more decreaced during the time of cardiopulmonary bypass compared to that of normal circulation. 2) The concentration of AB-PC in the various organs have shown quite different level at the differ-ent flow rate of cardiopulmonarp bypass. At the flow rate of 50 ml/kg/min., the kideny level was 170.5 ± 23.5 per cent, the heart, 120.6,1 ±.12.8, the brain, 120.6 ± 7.3, the lung, 117.1 ± 15.3, and the liver 75.0 ± 5.3 per cent of the contral. However, under the flow rate at 30 ml/kg/min. the concentration of AB-PC in the liver and kidney were decreaced down to 40 per cent of the control level. On the other hand the brain, the heart, and the lung were about 100 per cent.
