This series will be intended for the floristic study on the Experimental Forest of Nara University of Education, where the natural forest is well reserved and the flora is very rich for its rather small area. The Forest is situated in the southwestern part of Nara Prefecture, just at the center of the Kii Peninsula. It rises to an altitude of 1200 m. s. m. and covers about 500 ha of mountain slopes along the Akadani River. This is the first paper of the series dealing with hepatic flora. From, the Forest are reported 123 species of Hepaticae, most of which are of the tropical or subtropical element. It is characteristic for the hepatic flora that plants of Porellaceae and Lejeuneaceae grow abundantly, while those of Scapaniaceae and Calypogeiaceae occur rather rarely. Also, it should be noted that Xenochila integrifolia, a very rare species of disjunctive distribution, grows vigorously on wet or moist rocks along mountain streams.
