The AC and DC polarographic studies of nitrophenols and p-nitrophenol sodium have been carried out in dimethylformamide. o-Nitrophenol gives two waves; the first wave has a wave height of one electron reduction and corresponds to the formation of nitrophenol anion radical, which has a intramolecular hydrogen bond, and the second wave has a wave height of five electrons reduction and corresponds to the formation of o-aminophenol. m-Nitrophenol gives four waves; both, the first and second wave have a wave height of one electron reduction and the reactions are reversible. The third shows a small wave height and the fourth appeared at about - 2.15 V. In the presence of phenol this substance gives two new waves, corresponding to two electrons reduction respectively. p-Nitrophenol gives two waves; the first wave corresponds to a reduction of phenolic hydrogen and the second wave is ascribed to the formation of dianion radical. In the presence of phenol the second wave grows to nearly four times the previous height and the third wave appears. These results are discussed in connection with the report of the ESR study of nitrophenol anion radical obtained by the electrolytic reduction.
