The oxidation of alkaline MnSO4 solution was studied by blowing the mixed gas of nitrogen and oxygen an upward vertical nozzle into the solution. The experimental results are summarized as follows. (1) Except for the final stage of the reaction, the overall rate of oxidation was not virtually affected by pH and temperature, but it increased with the rise of flow rate of the mixed gas stream. (2) The oxidation was presumed to be composed of the sequential steps of dissolution of O2 gas and reaction between Mn(OH)2 and O2. Under the assumption that the overall rate is controlled by the dissolution of O2 gas, a zero order rate equation regarding Mn(OH)2 is derived. It was found from the experiment that the overall rate was represented by a zero order rate equation except for the final stage. (3) The rate constant of overall reaction was calculated, and the activation energy 10.7 kJ/mol was obtained. (4) From the rate constant of the rate equation, the liquid-film mass transfer coefficient of dissolved oxygen at the bubble surface was estimated, and it was fairly well coincident with the measured value.
