• This report describes the design and development of a simple interconnect method to communicate between microprocessor-based systems located in the same laboratory room. The interconnect technology is based on a star-type configuration where a centralized intelligent switch provides paths between all workstations using a bit-serial, asynchronous lines. The switch built from Z80-CPU families may serve a dual function, both as a message switch and as a data processing/buffering facility. The major advantage of this method is to minimize both software and hardware complexity required in the workstation to be interconnected.
