A touch represents the experience of an encounter. Touch is also a way of communication. We can ascertain both our existence and the existence of another person by a touch. This paper considers the experience of a touch through clay work. The subjects were asked to engage in clay work and then told to answer a questionnaire; following this, they were interviewed about their experiences. The subjects can be classified into two groups; those who worked on a single piece, and those who worked on several pieces that formed one story. The latter group touched clay a lot more and gradually accepted their anxiety about clay work, and then they proceeded to work on several pieces. It seems that the experience of touching clay relates to forming or expanding their stories. I can say that touching clay is akin to being confused and that dividing the clay into small parts or pieces is equivalent to clearing this confusion. Further, by touching clay, they become self-aware and have an encounter with their own self.
