In this paper, results of laboratory test with gap type noise sources are reported. A simulated capacitively coupled electrode geometry was used under AC excitation to obtain basic information available on analysis of gap type discharge on power lines. Small gap sizes of 0.083 to 2.0 mm and capacitances of 1 to 4 pF were established in this test and microgap type discharge pulses were recorded using a wide bandwidth oscilloscope. Frequency spectra included in the discharge events were measured by an Electromagnetic Interference Meter. Electromagnetic interference on communication devices is discussed referring to the discharge events. The present paper shows the discharge characteristics of the small gap and the spark type discharge occurring in the gap as a source of high level of interference.
