The previous paper by this author in 1972 outlined the historical background of the establishment of Shinkyo-soen, an institution for the mentally handicapped. It also outlined the fundamental attitudes toward the treatment of the mentally handicapped and the daily life at Shinkyo-soen. It was pointed out that within these circumstances, the abilities of the mentally handicapped for leading a normal social life changed affirmatively. The papar emphasized that this change in ability was related to the influences of maintaining and facilitating the mental health of the handicapped in their daily lives at Shinkyo-soen. The purposes of the present study were: first, to investigate the feelings and attitudes the mentally handicapped show in their acceptance of Shinkyo-soen life; second, to investigate their guardians' attitudes toward Shinkyo-soen; and third, to examine the way how the exploratoly attempts over the last several years have affected the mentally handicapped and their guardians. This study was carried out by employing an interview of ten-item questions and answers with the mentally handicapped, with a ten-item questionnaire sent to the guardians, and with MAS re-test taken by the guardians (the guardians were first given the MAS test when their children entered Shinkyo-soen and they retook from February to April in 1973.) From this investigation, the following can generally be said: (1) it can be conjectured that not only do the handicapped affirmatively adapt to Shinkyo-soen life, but they also actively participate in and enjoy the group life at the institution, and (2) the guardians are happy to find that their economical and mental burdens are lessened after their children entered this institution, they are satisfied with the life at the institution, and they have much confidence in Masutaro Ozaki and the other leaders at the institution. The results of the MAS test indicated that the guardians' tendency toward anxiety significantly decreased after their children entered Shinkyo-soen. The ability of the mentally handcappied for leading a normal social life cannot be thought of as related only to constitutional disabilities, but this social ability should also be thought of as related to the life history and to the condition of the present social life of the handicapped persons. The improvements in the mental health and then in the ability to lead a normal social life of the handicapped at Shinkyo-soen can be said to be not only desirable for the lives of the handicapped in the institution, but these improvements also are related to the emotional stability of the guardians who have positively accepted the life at the institution. The results of this investigation, along with the results of the previous study, can be considered to indicate the importance of the relationship between environmental conditions and social abilities of the mentally handicapped.
