We surveyed the present situation and projected courses for high-technology in 72 institutions in Japan, especially genetic engineering and cell technology in medical technological courses. Sixty of 72 colleges or universities surveyed which have medical technology courses, responded to our questionnaire. Fifty-seven percent of schools have genetic engineering and cell technology courses; lecture courses are offered in 18 schools, lecture and practice courses in 14 schools; 12 schools have optional courses at present. The education staff of 90 percent of schools answered that high-technology courses are necessary for medical technicians nowadays. Forty-three percent of schools without these courses have plans to open these courses or additinal courses. The most difficult factors in opening these courses are obtaining financial support and staff.
