Kurotaki - mura is situated generally on the northern part of Yoshino -gun in the center of Nara Prefecture, (fig.l) It is the extreme north of the Yoshino Mountain District, so-called "Yamato Alps!' The village is surrounded with high mountains of the 1,000 meter above-sea -level class, through the village runs the Kurotaki River together with its branches, the Makio River and the Kasagi River. And thus in the valley of these rivers are to be found the settlements of thisvillage, (fig. 2 & 3) This village is nearly 20 kilometers apart from Shimoichiguchi ^Station of the Kinki Nippon Railway in the Yoshino River Valley, and if we get on a Nara Kotsu bus we can reach the village in 1 hour. 94% of this village is utilized as forest, and thus this village is blessed with forest resources, (tab.l) But recently the decrease of households and the depopulation are very remarkable, i. e. in these ten years from 1960 to 1970 the population decrease is 32.5% and the decrease of households is 17.4%. (tab. 2 & 3) The most remarkable depopulation is 52.5% of Torisumi Settlement, and the most remarkable decrease of households is also 42.9% of the same settlement that lies in the northern mountain region, (photo 1) On the contrary Miyoshino Settlement which stands along the Kurotaki River keeps the constant population and households, (photo 3) The remainder ratios in the village of junior high school graduates are only from 7.1 to 7.6%. (tab. 4) Although this village is situated in the mountain region, it is under blessed circumstances of traffic, communication, culture and medical establishments. But virtually the depopulation of more than 2% a year is occurring together with the decrease of households as mentioned above.
