I examined the gastrocnemius head types and calf-formes on about 500 individuals (400 males and 100 females) by palpation and manipulation in proper position (standing on toes) and found the following results : In the majority of cases, the medial head is longer in both sexes. The differences between the right and left sides are minimal and the racial differences relatively small. On the calf-form, "medium" is most frequency in male, and "gross" is most in female. According to my dissection materials (14 males and 2 females), type I and type II are nearly equal frequency. And the study on 500 living Japanese males carried out by Chippaux and Olivier showed all type I. And then Huttel reports type I is 20.5% and type III 84. 5% on Bas-Dahomey Negroes. It is contrary to the statement of anatomy and many authors, therefore we have to observe the numerous dissection materials. At any rate, as Loth's remark we should be note that the fibers of the lateral head enter the tendon gradually than those of the medial head, while the medial head ends as a marked fleshy belly, and as a result the belly of the muscle is less conspicuous on contraction.
