The author argues for integration of whole-class synchronous videoconferencing into regular courses in an attempt to develop both oral communication ability and attitude toward communication in intermediate EFL classes. One of the critical points in EFL is lack of authentic opportunity to use English. Most students study English without any immediate need to exercise the language. In such a situation the author conducted seven multi-point videoconferences via satellite, linking her class with other university classes in Japan and in Thailand over three semesters as a part of the regular course. The series of joint classes focused on interactive oral activities and multimedia presentations in English whereas reading and writing tasks on related issues were given before and after each satellite class. Post-project survey revealed that the participants highly evaluated videoconferencing. They felt that skills and motivation to communicate in English as well as intercultural awareness were fostered in the affective and social environment. In addition, the joint project, made transparent via the technology, suggested possibility of faculty development. The author finally discusses factors to maximize the effect of videoconferencing as well as its limitations from pedagogic, technical and administrative viewpoints.
