A laboratory stock of Kluyveromyces lactis, CBS2359/152, was not affected evidently for the growth on a complete medium (YMPD) containing rather high concentration of each of the 4 antibiotics: antimycin A, oligomycin, erythromycin and chloramphenicol. CBS2359/152 was crossed with another laboratory stock, VD1, which could not grow on the medium containing the same concentration of each of the 3 antibiotics except chloramphenicol. The resultant ascospores (38 tetrads) were examined for the degree of growth on the medium containing each of the antibiotics, as well as for the already-known genetic characters. Although the results showed a rather complicated segregation pattern, we could explain that the resistances to the 3 antibiotics except chloramphenicol were principally controlled by two unlinked complementary genes which determined simultaneously the 3 resistant characters. The segregation pattern for the resistance to chloramphenicol was more complicated. Many spores which could not grow on the medium containing chloramphenicol appeared, although both parental strains were resistant to the antibiotic. From the result, it was assumed that one or more suppressor genes affected the expression of the resistance and that one of the two genes controlling simultaneously the 3 resistant characters also controlled the resistance to chloramphenicol.
