We have made experiments on the electron spin resonance (X band) of powderphosphors (Zn, Cd) S : Mn and their quantitative analyses of manganese by absorptiometry.The samples used are ZnS : Mn, 7ZnS・3CdS : Mn, 5ZnS・5CdS : Mn, 3ZnS・7CdS : Mn andCdS : Mn, each of which has the wurtzite structure and contains about 1% of Mn by weight.ESR spectrum of CdS : Mn is ascribed to the superposition of the hyperfine spectra dueto an exchange-coupled Mn2+ ion pair and an isolated Mn2+ ion ; other four samples (ZnS :Mn etc.) give hyperfine spectra ascribed to a pair of exchange-coupled Mn2+ ion with no ornegligible spectrum due to an isolated Mn2+ ion. Does it mean that ZnS : Mn has larger molefraction of Mn2+ ions than CdS : Mn? No, the quantitative analysis indicates that the molefraction of Mn2+ ions is larger in the sample CdS : Mn than in the sample ZnS : Mn.
