To analyze the difference of structure and function in dry matter production observed in Fagus crenata natural forests at two different altitudes of Mt. Naeba in the central part of Japan, an eco-physiological computer simulation model was developed. 1 Preparation of data by field and laboratory work. In order to determine the amount of leaves and their spatial distribution along the tree stem axis, a number of sample trees were felled and measured by the stratified clipping method. These field data were used to examine some procedures of eco-physiological computer simulation model.
