Terpenoids are omnipresent groups of substances occurring in the microbial, plant and animal kingdom. Structures of all these compounds are based on the linking together of C蔀 , biological isoprenoid units. The terpenes are important compounds for these reaction ability and stereochemical structures to the synthetic chemistry. Among the studies of the microbiological conversion of hydrocarbons, the studies of terpenes are very behind from the other compounds such as aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons and steroids. Most reserches, for their distinct and economical reason, devoted to the conversion of terpenolds have been concentrated on the steroids. There has been comparatively little effort devoted to conversion of the nonsteroid terpenes. We studied a series of microbiological conversion of terpenes from the viewpoints of their new metabolites, potential application and reaction mechanism, and attempted a detailed study of each step involving in the hope that these might throw light on the association of the synthetic and microbiological chemistry. In order to test also generality of the microbiological conversion of terpenes, we chose various monoterpenes, namely, acyclic monoterpenes such as citronellal, citral, geraniol, linalool, and bicyclic monoterpenes such as camphor, borneol, and cyclic monoterpenes such as α-terpineol, menthone. As the results we isolated several new bacteria for each terpenes and found a number of new metabolites and interesting reactions. These conversions involve oxidation of alcohol or aldehyde, oxidation of methylene group of carbonyl, oxygenation of Baeyer-Villiger type reaction in the cell, and subsequent ring fission and stereochemical transitions. In our limited studies it has shown that there is need for additional investigation dealing with both the microbiological conversion of biologically active terpenoids and the mechanisms involved in these conversion. It is hoped that it will stimulate interest in incorporating microbial reactions into the field of chemical synthesis.
