Dansyl-modified β-, γ-cyclodextrins (1 and 2) have been prepared as a sensor for detectingbioactive-organic compounds such as steroids and alkaloids. 1 shows pure monomer fluorescencewhose intensity is decreased upon addition of guest species. However, 2 shows two typesof pure monomer fluorescence, that is, one is the same for the case of 1, the other is whoseintensities is enhanced upon addition of guest species. This guest-induced variation in thefluorescence intensity suggests that the dancylglycine moiety acts as a spacer which enables thecyclodextrin to form 1 : 1 host complexing by narrowing the large γ-cyclodextrin cavity. Thevalue △I/I°, where I and ro are fluorescence intensities in the presence and absence of a guestand △I is 1°-I is fluorescence parameter. 1 exhibits higher selective and sensitive molecularrecognition ability for steroids and alkaloids except for lithocholic acid than does 2.
