Demographic changes in five populations of Rumex obtusifolius which grow indifferent plant communities including levee of arable land, grassland, forest floorand roadsides have been investigated in this study, in order to develop the teachingmethods available for the environmental education within "cultivation" area of industrialarts in the lower secondary school. In R. obtusifolius, the characteristics ofpopulation dynamics, distributional pattern of individuals, and the causal and riskof mortality were influenced greatly by the life-form diversity of community. Themortality rates in each site were generally high towards both ends of a gradient.The recruitment rates in each site did not show a certain tendency in changes withlife-form diversity in community. However, mean recruitment rates of habitatssignificantly changed according to degree of life-form diversity of community,showing that the recruitment rates decreased towards the higher end of gradient. Inpopulation of R. obtusifolius within a community with high life-form diversity theprobability of survivorship of individuals depended on size for matures and time ofemergence for seedlings. Consistent differences in distribution between Rumex spp.were found along the gradient in each habitat. This distributional relationship couldbe represented along a gradient throughout five habitbts.From the above mentioned facts, we thought the simplified analysis of the populationdynamics of the weeds and ruderal plants may serve as effective materials forenvironmental education in cultivation learning.
