A unified approach using curvilinear hybridedge/nodal elements with triangular shape is, for the first time, described for the study of guided-wave problems. Not only thelowest order (fundamental) but the higher order elements aresystematically constructed. The advantage of curvilinear elementslies in the fact that they can model curved boundaries with moreaccuracy and lesser number of degrees of freedom than rectilinearelements. The vector basis functions derived here are alsoapplicable to rectilinear cases. To show the validity and usefulnessof the present approach, computed results are illustrated for ribwaveguides with straight boundaries and circular waveguideswith large refractive-index differences.
