A time-domain beam propagation method (BPM)based on the finite-element scheme is described for the analysisof reflections of both transverse electric and transverse magneticpolariaed pulses in wavegniding structures containing arbitrarilyshaped discontinuities. In order to avoid nonphysical reflectionsfrom the computational window edges, the perfectly matched layerboundarv condition is introduced. The mesent algorithm usine thePade approximation is, to our knowle-dge, the Krst time-domainbeam propagation method which can treat wide-band opticalpulses. After validating this method for an optical grating withmodulated refrative indexes, various photonic crystal circuitcomponents are simulated.
