Purpose: Whether the recovery from experimentally induced high myopia is a vision-dependent process was studied in chicks. Methods: Initially forty chicks were monocularly form-deprived from day 1 after hatching for a week. On day 8, twenty-five chicks, of which deprived eyes were approximately -20 D myopic, were selected for this study. The eyes of 5 chicks were enucleated and eye dimensions measured. The other twenty chicks underwent one of four kinds of treatments for a week: wearing a -20 D, a zero-powered lens, an empty ring goggle or untreated (n=5 in all groups). On day 15, the refractive state and the eye dimensions were measured. Results: The interocular difference (treated-contralateral control eye) in refraction of eyes wearing the -20 D lens did not change significantly from that on day 8 (P=0.41), but the others reduced. The interocular differences in the axial and equatorial lengths of eyes wearing -20 D lens was greater than the others (P<0.001). The coefficient of correlation between the refractive error and the axial length of the treated eyes was highly significant. Conclusions: These findings indicate that an appropriate correction of the induced high myopia prevents recovery from the myopia in neonatal chicks and support the concept of vision-dependent eye growth regulation controlling the axial length.
