1) The present author succeeded in proving a malaria infection in 37 out of 146 bats captured in Taiwan. 2) Though there were several species of bats which showed the infection, following three species were identified with Harpiocephalus harpia harpia (hairy winged bat), Murina puta KISHIDA (Formosan tube-nosed bat), and Hipposideros armiger terasensis KISHIDA (armor bearer horseshoe bat or formosan horseshoe bat). 3) All parasites found in blood smears were gametocytes only, and no pigmented schizonts (ring form, amoeboid form and segment form) were to be seen. In comparison with the result of the present author's study on Hepatocystes of formosan monkey (Macacus cyclopis), squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus roberti, Call. eryth. centralis, Call. eryth. taiwanensis, Tamcops macellandi formosanus.), and flying squirrel (Petaurista grandis), this examination-though defective-gives us a suggestion to presume that the parasite may be a kind of Hepatocystes. 4) A non-pigmented segment form including 12 spores was found in C group no. 22. The similar parasite was found in bats with malaria infection in many parts of the world, but its appropriate name is undecided, for we have not any complete description about the parasite. Therefore, it must be avoides to decided the nomenclature of the parasite in this paper, but a Hepatocystes infection is very probable. 5) Though there are already a number of reports about malaria from parts of the world, this is the first one in Taiwan.
