This paper investigates the acquisition of the scope relation between quantifiers and Neg. As the result of an experiment on English-speaking children, Musolino (1998) argues that the relative scope of quantifiers and Neg is isomorphic to their overt c-command relation or their linear order in child language, unlike in adult language. The results of an experiment on Japanese-speaking children indicate, however, that the relative scope of quantifiers and Neg in child language is isomorphic to their linear order, not to their overt c-command relation. This isomorphism observed in child language is attributed not to the Subset Principle as in Musolino (1998) but to the Isomorphism Principle.
