This is the first and introductory paper in the author's research project on the comparative study of the four Southeast Asian countries, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.The point selected as the first in this research project is to identify the basic characteristics of the recent experiences in these countries.The concept of the“Transitional Economic Growth”is adopted here to describe the common historical experience of these countries, and under this concept an effort was made to find some differences among the countries concerned.The method is to observe the performance of the crucial macro-economic variables such as growth rate, labor productivity and export/total product ratio.In the subsequent phase in this research projet, the more detailed analysis will be made on the major problems found in this introductory phase.
