Many grammarians have argued against the traditional analysis of the English auxiliary system proposed in Chomsky (1957). The claims common to them all are that the perfective and progressive auxiliaries must be incorporated into the verb phrase, and that the verb phrase must be layered. As an example of such an approach, Akmajian, Steele, and Wasow (1979) will be reviewed and criticized in this paper. They have analysed the auxiliary system within the framework of X^^—-theory, but ignored one of the most important points of that theory, that is, various sorts of complement phrases can be structurally distinguished only if X^^—-theory is assumed. This paper shows that, when the complements to the veyb phrase are taken into consideration, the phrase-structure rules in Akmajian, Steele, and Wasow (1979) must be modified as in the following ; S→NP AUX V_3 AUX→{Tense <do>___— Model} V^3→(have-en) V^3 V^3→(be-ing) V^2 V^2→V^1 (PP) (S) V^1→V (NP) (PP)... The point of this modified theory is that V^3 is a recursive category, and the complements to the verb phrase are distributed into V^1 or V^2 level. This paper also deals with one of the problems relevant to the auxiliary analysis, that is, the position of S-adverbs. It will be shown that this problem must he accounted for partly by the perceptual strategy which says that an element adjacent to the verb is interpreted as the modifier of that verb.
