Chemical properties of green macroalgal biomass were investigated in the present study. The chemical compositions of phycocolloids of Ulva spp., Blidingia sp. and Monostroma sp. were predominantly composed of sulfated polysachcarides containing rhamnose, glucuronic acid and xylose in addition to glucose, and the composition varied depending on the algal species. Chemical structures of phycocolloids (Ulvan) of fast-growing Ulva spp. (Ulva meridinalis and Ulva ohnoi) were further studied by NMR spectroscopy. Ulvans of both species were composed of α-1,4-linked rhamnose with sulfation at C3, β-1,4-linked glucuronic acid and β-1,4-linked xylose. Additionally, U. meridinalis contained sulfated xylose residue and starch. Ulvan as well as starch and cellulose are expected as biomass feedstock to produce biofuels and biomaterials from green macroalgal biomass.
