Effects of delignification treatment on enzymatic saccharification of wood powder (Akita cedar) were examined. The delignification treatment with 3 wt% alkaline aqueous solution of the sodium hypochlorite at room temperature increased the efficiency of the enzymatic saccharification. The 80% passage particle size of wood powder used for this experiment is 2mm. After treatment of wood powder with sodium hypochlorite for 4 hour and 24 hour, the efficiency of saccharification showed 90% and 109% respectively. It is shown that the delignification treatment with sodium hypochlorite is useful from the aspect of energy and cost in saccharification preprocess.
