Efficient production of biofuels and biomaterials from renewable bioresources is key to resolving global warming and exhaustion of fossil fuels. Cellulose is the most abundant biomass, and thus it is an indispensable and valuable material for the production of biofuels and biomaterials. However, plant cell wall is very stable, and this characteristic leads to difficulty in efficient saccharification of cellulosic materials for production of fermentable sugars that are starting materials for the production of biofuels and biomaterials. To overcome this problem, cell wall-degrading enzymes have been expressed in rice, whose straw is the most abundant agricultural waste, and it was found that expression of such enzymes enhanced the saccharification efficiency.
