The objective of this R&D is development of conversion technology from hydrocarbon biocrude synthesized by microalgae into "Drop-in fuel" having the same quality as that of petroleum. It was revealed that microalgae oil contained some metals, sulfur and chloride. Additionally, it was found that impurities in unpurified Botryococcus braunii oil were free fatty acids. As the boiling range of these biocrudes was heavier than that of useful fuel, we applied the petroleum conversion technology to producing middle distillates from microalgae oil. For production of jet fuel and diesel, the hydrocracking technology was investigated. In order to analyze the quality of jet fuel and diesel, we used reagent squalane as a model compound instead of microalgae oil. It was found that the developed catalyst showed a high selectivity of middle distillates in this reaction and the product oil from this reaction meet into Japanese Industrial Standards for jet fuel and diesel. And it is also confirmed that this technology can be applied to unpurified microalgae oil.
