• The authors discussed causes and effects of barriers to energy efficiency in the residential sector. By considering probable consumers' implicit discount rates with estimated additional production costs for higher energy-efficient technologies, economic feasibilities were examined as for the cases of air conditioners in Indian and Chinese markets.
