Miyazaki prefecture has an abundance of solar energy, and the University of Miyazaki set up a beam-down aolar concentration system in their Kibana campus on August 6, 2012 to develop the technology for intensive use of solar thermal energy. This system has a central tower of 16-meter at height with 88 units of heliostat in 60 meter by 60 meter area on the northern side of the tower and can collect approximately 100kW of thermal energy. The heliostat tracks the sun with 10 sheets of concave reflector of 50 cm in diameter, and the system has an elliptic mirror on the top of the tower as secondary reflector. Various projects are being planned to develop technology to be the hub in solar thermal energy applications in Japan with the utilization of this system.
