Cellulosic biomass is expected to be widely utilized for energy/material sources, but the fairly rigid structure complicates the saccharification, a principal process for utilization, of cellulosic biomass at low energy. The use of solid catalysts with large particle sizes in the saccharification process is attractive, because solid catalysts themselves have high reaction activities effective for decomposition of cellulosic structure into low molecules, and also separation of solid catalysts from generated sugar solution is relatively easy, which enable us to use solid catalysts repeatedly. We show here how to confect such solid catalysts and their potential to saccharify cellulosic biomass at low energy.
