Alaska's small remote rural or "Bush" communities rely on barges from Seattle or airplanes from Alaska regional centers to bring in fuel and other supplies. Their solid waste problem is significantly impacted by high transportation costs for these off-the road system villages. It is too expensive for remote rural communities to ship solid waste out by barge or airplane. The situation in remote rural Alaska has been neglected and there are serious challenges to air and water quality. The focus on the global environment is also bringing international attention to their Solid Waste Problem. We will provide an analysis of Bush Alaska's solid waste problems based on facts gathered from our field work and presented are some possible technology transfer solutions with involving some evolving Japanese environmental technologies.
